recruiting and transferring in high school basketball. The most common question asked in the basketball world every spring is, “Who is going to be good next year?” The question is asked hundreds of times at all levels including high school and college. Earlier in my coaching career, the answer was usually simple. You looked at returning starters, schedule strength, coaching and made an educated guess. The recent trend of recruiting and transferring in Iowa High School Basketball is making answering that question nearly impossible. In the past couple years I have been forced to answer that question this way, “Ask me in October when we see where all the transfers and recruits end up.”

Nesbitt to be a Hawkeye
The irony wasn't lost on Ames High senior Trisha Nesbitt. Growing up in the home of Iowa State, Nesbitt, a 5-foot-7 point guard, announced Friday she's accepting a scholarship offer to play at Iowa. "I know it's weird that I'm going to Iowa when I live in Ames," Nesbitt said with a laugh. "I'm really excited. It was the best opportunity and something I couldn't pass up. I'm really happy to be going to Iowa; I think it will be a great experience for me." The Iowa coaching staff initiated contact a few weeks ago, inquiring if Nesbitt would have any interest. Nesbitt took a visit to Iowa City and was then offered a scholarship a week ago. After thinking about it for a week, Nesbitt pulled the trigger Friday. She chose the Hawkeyes over Drake, Creighton and Boise State "When I went for my visit, I loved the campus and really got to know the coaching staff and they were amazing," Nesbitt said. "I also know some of the players there that I've played with before so that's exciting. It was really sweet to get an offer from Iowa; this is a big time opportunity." Nesbitt can now focus on her senior season. The Little Cyclones will be considered among the top teams in Class 4A, returning most of their personnel from last year's 16-7 squad. "I won't have to worry about anything now but playing," Nesbitt said. Nesbitt averaged 14.7 points and 4.8 assists per game a year ago. The Little Cyclones are 52-16 in Nesbitt's three years running the offense.
Ames all-stater Nesbitt picks Iowa
Ames basketball player Trisha Nesbitt contemplated colleges in four time zones before determining she didn't want to go far from home.Nesbitt, an all-state guard, said Friday that she plans to play at Iowa. She decided against schools as far apart as Vermont, Bradley, Boise State and Pacific."They're all so far away," Nesbitt said. "I wanted to stay in Iowa."Nesbitt, a 5-foot-7 senior, was a Des Moines Sunday Register second-team all-stater last season. She averaged 14.8 points and nearly five assists a game.

She'll join Linn-Mar of Marion guard Jaime Printy, another senior who said she'll play at Iowa.Nesbitt said she is close to her family and was interested in an in-state school. She's one of seven children, including two young Ethiopian brothers who were adopted by her family in 2007."They're my biggest fans," Nesbitt said of 5-year-old Malachi and 3-year-old Trey.Nesbitt, a four-year starter, was named to the Register's Elite all-CIML girls' basketball team last winter. Iowa freshman Tia Mays was named to that team, too; they'll be teammates for the Hawkeyes next season.
"I didn't know that was coming," Nesbitt said. "It's the best opportunity I could ever have."
