THE WEEK THAT WAS AAU 2008: Iowa State Tournament
Spring is here (I hope) and the AAU season has already started. Last Saturday I made the rounds at Maple Grove watching 14u action. On Sunday Coach Teas & I traveled south down I35 to Des Moines Hoover to catch the Iowa State AAU tournament.
AAU is different than high school in that as a fan (or blogger) I can see many games in one day. I have a callus on my fingers from writing down all the action. The talent level is generally the same across the board, but you will still see the occasional blow out where the newly installed mercy rule could be invoked. With deeper talent, the possessions generally drop from the high school season. Assuming the same 66 possessions for each team, that means 6.6 possessions from about 11 possessions in the winter. The speed of the game is a bit faster.
One early trend is playing up. Every tournament had a team or teams playing up to go against bigger, faster, stronger competition. That is fine, but when it comes to national tournament time it is probably wiser to stay in class. All the teams I saw that played up were beat, but some made it to the finals against teams two or three years older.
HELP NEEDED
Now that the AAU Season is under way I need the help of the teams involved. Rosters, first and foremost are critical. If you have a website, make sure you have names and numbers. Some sites just have names. Talking to the college coaches this is not a good thing. It is much better to have numbers along with the names. Even better is to have the names on the back of the jersey. If you dont have a website email me your rosters and I will get them up. If I don't have your website linked, let me know. Go to my profile and email me with the correct link.
I also am looking for schedules. When your team is off around the country it would be a good idea to email me the results. I will get them up.
Also I am trying to get all the winter all conference teams listed. I have a good start in some of the states, but there are holes. If I dont have your conferences list up, go to my profile and email me.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Replacing 8 players from last year, IBCA Select Red has retooled and reloaded as they won the Iowa State AAU Junior Eligible tournament. They have added all state guard Jaime Printy (headed to Iowa) to their backcourt and up and coming Kionna Kellogg to the front court. The hold overs from last year include Trisha Nesbitt, another all state guard, and Amber Kirschbaum. Jessica McDowell (Northern Iowa) moved up from last year's second team. Nine of their players have been involved in the Iowa High School tournament at some point in their careers. IBCA uses a lot of different looks on defense and has team speed, athleticism and basketball savvy. IBCA was not at full strength when I saw them on Sunday with another addition 6-3 Katie Schechinger out due to family obligations. IBCA wont be playing again until June.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Trisha Nesbitt of IBCA Select Red was named tournament MVP by the folks in Des Moines and she is the first gbbrecruit player of the week in the summer of 08. The point guard had a strong finish with 18 points over Team Iowa in the championship with 3s, drives and free throws. The point guard has good vision and communication skills and moves with confidence.
A word about how these teams are selected. It is ALL performance based. It is basically recognizing good performances for the week. To make this list I have established ground rules. #1. I have to see the player perform during the week. #2. The player needs to be above 100 pp100. #3. The player needs to be above .500 floor %. I will accept a lower floor % if the pp100 is above 100. #4. This is a change from the winter high school season---the player needs to have 6 possessions for the game. In summer ball many teams have 10 players that rotate. With 66 possessions on average, 6 possessions is about the average.

JUNIOR ELIGIBLE D1 CHAMPIONSHIP
IBCA SELECT RED 61,
TEAM IOWA 44
IBCA Select Red beat Team Iowa for the Junior Eligible D1 championship 61-44. IBCA is made up of veterans--09s and 10s. Team Iowa is made up entirely from the 2011 class. Team Iowa is not only young, but they look like they have been cut from the same cloth. All are between 5-9 and 6-2 with the average coming in at 5-11. They are all lean and athletic.
IBCA scored on their first possession with an inside bucket by Kionna Kellogg. Team Iowa
started off the game with a 1/7 sequence as IBCA built up a 6-2 lead. IBCA was scoring in the paint against the youngsters. IBCA led 11-4 after a pair of free throws by Amber Kirschbaum with 1:05 left. Team Iowa was able to break the IBCA press for two and on the next possession cut the margin to 11-8 on a put back by Virginia Johnson.
Team Iowa tied the game at 12 after a three by Lindsey Smith followed by a free throw by Smith on the next possession. After that Team Iowa went into a four possession drought on four straight turnovers. IBCA milked that opportunity with five straight scores, two scores on transition lay ups, to pull out 20-12. IBCA continued their hot hand with an 8/9 sequence overall. Trisha Nesbitt was hot for IBCA with seven in the second quarter, 11 for the half. For Team Iowa Smith matched Nesbitt with 7 for the quarter, six coming on two 3s. It was 33-22 IBCA at the half.
Team Iowa was able to narrow the margin to 41-34 with 2:20 to go in the third on a drive by Allison Emrich. IBCA, despite being out sized as a team, did a fair job on the offe
nsive boards and Jessica McDowell made two free throws after IBCA had three cracks at scoring. IBCA had four points in the quarter on second chancers. Nesbitt added a 3 for a 46-34 IBCA lead heading into the fourth.
The changing defense and savvy veteran play kept Team Iowa at arms length. Team Iowa never got the margin to single digits again in the fourth. The last two minutes were empty of scoring however. IBCA had a five possession drought down the stretch before Katelyn Sunde scored, while Team Iowa finished the contest with seven consecutive empty trips.
This was a good experience for Team Iowa making it to the finals in the AAU State tournament two years ahead of schedule. Cutting down on turnovers will be a key for their summer season. Now most of the Iowa teams won't take the floor again until June.

I am adding a new feature--for better use of a word it is assists, but not in the technical sense of the word. These are the players that gave the ball to the next scorer. So if the scorer drove into score the passer gets credit in this system. It is more like the hockey assist. I will only be able to do this when Coach Teas is taking photos.

IOWA STATE AAU TOURNAMENT
Des Moines Hoover
JUNIOR ELIGIBLE D1 SEMIFINALS
IBCA SELECT RED 75,
ALL IOWA ATTACK 17s 39
What a difference a game makes. All Iowa Attack went from a 132.9 pp100 in the quarters to a 60.9 pp100 in the semis as IBCA Select dominated as much as AIA dominated Lightning Scarlet in the quarters. There was little doubt the direction of the contest as IBCA led 22-7 after one quarter. 8 IBCA players had 6 or more points led by Kionna Kellogg with 18.
IBCA had two former 2007 AIA players on the roster, but only one played. Katelyn Sunde played while Katie Schechinger had other obligations on Sunday. That isn't the only addition to the IBCA roster. Jaime Printy, who is headed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, has moved over from Iowa Elite. Printy missed out on last year's action due to a knee injury. Two players return from the IBCA 2007 edition--Trisha Nesbitt and Amber Kirschbaum. Two others have moved up from the 2007 second team---Jessica McDowell, who is headed to Northern Iowa, and Brittany Peterson.
Right away on the first IBCA possession the tone of the game was set. Nesbitt struck from behind the arc and the Red built on that lead to 9-0 before AIA managed to find the bottom of the basket. They had an 8 possession drought to start the contest. Three of their first four possessions ended up as turnovers. It was raining 3s for IBCA in the first quarter with four total made. Katie Gustafson ended up with two of the four. Meanwhile AIA only mustered two field goals the entire quarter. It was 22-7 after one.

a little over a minute. On her 10th point of the half, and 6th of the quarter AIA took a time out with the score 31-14. AIA did outscore IBCA the rest of the half, but still trailed 36-20 at the break.
IBCA opened the third quarter with a 15-5 run. Sunde delivered two consecutive long range missiles in the run. In fact IBCA had an 8/9 offensive stretch. AIA didn't have any massive drought, but IBCA was connecting on three 3s and one conventional three point play in adding to their lead.
IBCA definitely cooled off at the start of the fourth quarter with a 1/5 sequence. Catching fire for IBCA in the fourth was Riley Norman with 7 points. The final was 75-39.

IOWA STATE AAU TOURNAMENT
Des Moines Hoover JUNIOR ELIGIBLE D2 CHAMPIONSHIP
RAILS 70, IBCA SELECT BLUE 56
This game featured the school based Des Moines Lincoln Rails and the younger, much younger IBCA Select Blue multi-school team. Blue is primarily 9th and 8th graders. They were up against a team that knows each other inside and out and the Rails featured Sara Wagner, a first team CIML Metro player, and Kelsie Reeves, a second team member. The Rails built big leads, then held on as the Blues rallied. The Rails made 15 free throws in the fourth quarter for a 70-56 championship win for the Rails.
The Blues grabbed the early lead with a trey from Al Oney on the second possession. The Rails answered with a Wagner basket from the left corner, but didn't take the lead until the 5:46 mark with a &1 by Amber Streyffler on a transition basket. That started a five straight scoring string by the Rails and a 9/11 sequence the rest of the half on a 19-6 run. Streyffler had 11 of the 21 first quarter points for the Rails. The young Blues had two droughts of 4 and 5 in the quarter. The Rails led 21-9 at the quarter.
Neither team had much success at the start of the second quarter with only one score by Oney of the Blues in the first 9 combined possessions. Then the Rails caught fire again.
They had an 8/10 offensive sequence and a 17-6 run. It was a 38-19 lead for the Rails at half.
That Rail lead ballooned out to 47-24 lead with 5 minutes left in the third quarter. The Blues started clicking at that point. It was the Rails catching fire in the last five minutes in the first half. The Baby Blues had a 16-6 run to finish the third quarter. The Blues had five straight scores. 7 different Blues scored in the quarter. The quarter ended on a Taylor Shull basket to make it 51-40.
The Rails used 15 made free throws to hold off the Blues in the fourth quarter. The Rails only made two field goals in the final frame. The Blues were able to cut the margin to single digits at 54-45 with 5:02 left. That was as close as it was going to get. The Rails were deadly at the line and the Blues could never gain traction. Reeves was in control with the ball and at the line. She ended up with 20 point, 12 in this quarter.
